Why Image Dimensions Matter for Every Platform

Each social media platform renders images differently β€” cropping, scaling, and compressing based on its own technical requirements. Uploading the wrong size creates three problems: the image is cropped unexpectedly, removing important content from the edges; the platform applies additional compression to oversized images, reducing quality; and thumbnail previews in feeds look distorted or pixelated, reducing engagement. The key distinction across platforms is between the uploaded resolution and the display resolution. Most platforms accept images larger than they display and downscale them. Instagram accepts images up to 1080px wide and displays them at various sizes depending on device. LinkedIn accepts up to 7680px and displays at various sizes. The Pixel Dimension Fundamentals

Every social media platform specifies image dimensions in pixels β€” the smallest addressable unit in a digital display. A 1080Γ—1080 pixel image contains 1,166,400 individual pixels arranged in a 1080-column by 1080-row grid. Each pixel stores colour information (in RGB format, three 8-bit values for red, green, and blue). The relationship between pixel dimensions and file size is direct: more pixels means more stored colour values, which means larger files before compression.

Resolution (DPI β€” dots per inch) is a property of printed output, not screen output. Screen images are measured in pixels, not DPI. A 1080Γ—1080 pixel image displayed on a 27-inch monitor at 81 PPI (pixels per inch) and the same image displayed on a 6-inch phone screen at 460 PPI look identical in terms of detail β€” more pixels appear in a smaller physical area on the phone, so the image appears sharper. DPI settings in image files exported for web use are irrelevant and ignored by browsers and social platforms, which only use the pixel dimensions.

Aspect Ratio Explained

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image's width and height, expressed as width:height. A 1:1 ratio is a square. A 16:9 ratio (1920Γ—1080) is standard widescreen. A 9:16 ratio (1080Γ—1920) is vertical widescreen used for Stories and Reels. A 4:5 ratio (1080Γ—1350) is the portrait format used for Instagram feed posts that shows the largest in the feed.

When an image's natural aspect ratio does not match the required platform aspect ratio, cropping or padding is necessary. Cropping removes content to match the required ratio β€” appropriate when the important content is centred and margins can be removed. Padding (letterboxing) adds blank space to the image edges to reach the required ratio without removing content β€” appropriate for product images or infographics where removing any edge content is unacceptable but results in black bars that reduce the visual impact.

Retina and High-DPI Displays

Apple's Retina displays and other high-DPI screens pack twice or more pixels into the same physical space as standard displays. A 1x display shows one pixel per CSS pixel. A 2x Retina display shows four pixels (2Γ—2) per CSS pixel. An image that looks sharp on a 1x display looks blurry on a 2x display if it was not designed for high-DPI β€” the browser stretches the available pixels to fill twice as many physical pixels, producing a noticeably blurry result.

For social media images displayed at fixed sizes on high-DPI screens, uploading at 2x the display size ensures sharpness. An Instagram profile photo displayed at 110Γ—110 CSS pixels should be uploaded at 220Γ—220 pixels or higher. A LinkedIn post image displayed at 552Γ—276 CSS pixels should be uploaded at 1104Γ—552 pixels or higher. Most platform specification guides account for this and specify recommended upload sizes at 2x the base display size β€” following the recommended sizes rather than the minimum sizes ensures high-DPI sharpness.

File Format Choice for Social Images

JPEG is appropriate for photographs and complex colour gradients. It achieves high compression ratios through lossy compression that discards imperceptibly fine colour variation. For social media photographs where platform recompression will further reduce quality anyway, uploading JPEG at 85-90% quality provides adequate quality with reasonable file size. PNG is appropriate for images with text, logos, sharp edges, or transparency. PNG uses lossless compression that preserves exact pixel values, preventing the colour banding and edge artifacts that JPEG compression introduces at text boundaries.

WebP achieves 25-35% smaller files than JPEG at equivalent quality and is now supported by all modern browsers. For images uploaded to platforms that accept WebP (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook) or for images used on your own website, WebP provides the best quality-to-size ratio. For platforms that do not explicitly support WebP or for email contexts, JPEG remains the safe standard choice.
