The Definitive Unit Conversion Guide: Metric, Imperial, and Common Conversions Explained

Unit conversion errors have caused engineering failures and medical mistakes. This guide covers the most important conversions accurately.

In 1999, NASA lost the Mars Climate Orbiter because one team used metric units and another used imperial with no conversion between them. The $327 million spacecraft was destroyed. Unit conversion is not trivial — in technical, medical, and engineering contexts it carries real consequences.

The Two Major Systems

The metric system (SI) is used by 195 of 196 countries as the official standard. It is based on powers of ten, making arithmetic straightforward. The imperial system — used customarily in the United States — has no consistent mathematical relationships between units: a mile is 5,280 feet, a foot is 12 inches, a pound is 16 ounces. These must be memorised.

Critical Length Conversions

1 metre = 3.28084 feet = 39.3701 inches. 1 kilometre = 0.621371 miles. 1 inch = 2.54 centimetres (defined relationship). 1 foot = 30.48 centimetres. For quick estimation: one metre ≈ one yard, one kilometre ≈ 0.6 miles.

Weight Conversions

1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds. 1 pound = 453.592 grams. 1 stone (UK body weight) = 14 pounds = 6.35 kilograms. Medical dosing should always use kilograms and milligrams regardless of how information is communicated to patients.

Temperature: The Non-Linear Conversion

The Measurement Systems Divide — Why Unit Conversion Is Still Necessary

The United States, Liberia, and Myanmar are the only countries that have not officially adopted the International System of Units (SI), commonly called the metric system, as their primary measurement system. The US continues to use the US customary system for everyday measurements — miles, pounds, gallons, Fahrenheit — while simultaneously using metric in scientific, medical, pharmaceutical, and military contexts. This dual system creates a persistent need for unit conversion in any context where US content or products interact with international standards.

The most consequential unit conversion failures are well documented. NASA's Mars Climate Orbiter was lost in 1999 because one engineering team used metric units (newton-seconds) and another used US customary units (pound-force-seconds) for the same thruster data. The discrepancy caused the spacecraft to fly too close to Mars and disintegrate. The error cost $327 million and an entire mission. In medicine, dosing errors due to unit confusion (milligrams vs micrograms, kilograms vs pounds for weight-based dosing) are a recognised patient safety concern documented across hundreds of incidents.

Metric Prefixes: The Full Scale

The metric system's power comes from its consistent prefix system that scales any base unit across 24 orders of magnitude. From smallest to largest: yocto (10⁻²⁴), zepto (10⁻²¹), atto (10⁻¹⁸), femto (10⁻¹⁵), pico (10⁻¹²), nano (10⁻⁹), micro (10⁻⁶), milli (10⁻³), centi (10⁻²), deci (10⁻¹), base unit, deca (10¹), hecto (10²), kilo (10³), mega (10⁶), giga (10⁹), tera (10¹²), peta (10¹⁵), exa (10¹⁸), zetta (10²¹), yotta (10²⁴). Understanding these prefixes enables rapid estimation even without a calculator — a nanometre is 10⁻⁹ metres (about the diameter of a small molecule), a gigabyte is 10⁹ bytes (approximately 10⁹ characters of text).

Everyday application of metric prefixes: in computing, kilo, mega, giga, tera, and peta are ubiquitous (kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes). Note the important distinction between SI kilo (exactly 1,000) and binary kilo (1,024 = 2¹⁰): 1 kilobyte in the SI sense is exactly 1,000 bytes, while 1 kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes. Hard drive manufacturers use SI kilobytes (making drives appear larger), while operating systems historically used binary kilobytes. In pharmacology, micro (10⁻⁶) and milli (10⁻³) are critical — a dose of 500 micrograms is 0.5 milligrams is 0.0005 grams, and errors in this conversion are potentially fatal.

Temperature Conversion: The Three Scales

The three temperature scales — Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin — are used in different contexts globally. Celsius is used for everyday temperature in virtually every country outside the US, for scientific measurements, and for cooking in metric countries. Fahrenheit is used for everyday temperature in the US and in some Caribbean territories. Kelvin is used in physics, thermodynamics, and astrophysics — it is an absolute scale where 0K is absolute zero, the theoretical lowest possible temperature.

The conversion formulas: Celsius to Fahrenheit: (°C × 9/5) + 32. Fahrenheit to Celsius: (°F − 32) × 5/9. Celsius to Kelvin: °C + 273.15. Key reference points: Water freezes at 0°C / 32°F / 273.15K. Water boils at 100°C / 212°F / 373.15K. Human body temperature is approximately 37°C / 98.6°F / 310.15K. Absolute zero is −273.15°C / −459.67°F / 0K. A common memory aid for approximate Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion: double the Celsius temperature and add 30 (accurate to within a few degrees for typical weather temperatures).

Cooking Conversions: Volume and Weight

Recipe unit conversion is among the most frequently needed everyday unit conversion tasks. US recipes typically use volume measurements (cups, tablespoons, teaspoons) where international recipes use weight (grams, kilograms). The problem with volume measurements for baking is that volume depends on how ingredients are packed — a cup of flour can weigh anywhere from 120g to 160g depending on whether it is sifted, spooned, or packed. Weight measurements eliminate this ambiguity entirely.

Common US volume to metric conversions: 1 cup = 236.6 ml (approximately 240ml in practice). 1 tablespoon = 14.79ml (approximately 15ml). 1 teaspoon = 4.93ml (approximately 5ml). 1 fluid ounce = 29.57ml. 1 pint = 473ml. 1 quart = 946ml. 1 US gallon = 3.785 litres. Note that UK measurements differ: 1 UK cup = 284ml (larger than US cup), 1 UK pint = 568ml (considerably larger than US pint). Recipes from different English-speaking countries may use the same words for different volumes.
